What is the chance that another child in our family will have LAMA2-RD?
When both parents are healthy carriers of the LAMA2 gene mutation, each pregnancy has:
- 25% chance of being born with the LAMA2-RD condition (the child inherits two mutated LAMA2 gene copies, one from each parent).
- 50% chance of being born a healthy carrier, like the parents (the child inherits one mutated LAMA2 gene copy, from one of the two parents). As a healthy carrier, the child will not be affected by the LAMA2-RD condition.
- 25% chance of being unaffected and not a carrier (the child inherits two normal LAMA2 gene copies, there are no mutations).
These odds are the same for every new pregnancy, no matter how many children the family has already had. Having one child with LAMA2-RD does not make it more or less likely that the next child will be affected.
